Spectral Fires – Left Behind (Track Of The Day, 7th June)

Melbourne melodic hardcore five piece Spectral Fires have released a video for their single “Left Behind”. The track was included as the third track of their 2016 release, Wayfarer. It’s our Track Of The Day today because it’s cool.

Following on from the EP title, the video for “Left Behind” shows the adventures of a guy, as he meets people along the road. The lone wayfarer becomes a duo, before growing into an eclectic group travelling in a combi van and seeming way more light-hearted than how he began.

Musically, “Left Behind” starts with feedback and twanging guitar before falling into full hardcore fire. The track is hectic and awesome and from the first listen, I wanted to hear where this was going. Where it’s going first is heading straight for a clean/dirty chorus:

“I’m moving out of sync and getting left behind
It’s sinking in that there’s nowhere left to hide.”

From there, the verses retain their fire, feeling like a discomfort and the seeking of something other or more than what they have. The video shows a solo traveller’s journey turn into a party, perhaps poking at the ‘something other’. The ending of the video shining a light on reality and the sense of being on their own.

Lyrics:

I bid farewell to my pain, it bitters and strains
Strung up with a long, tight hold,
Never doing as it’s told.
What do you see when you’re looking at me?
A heartbreaker? Wave chaser?
Underneath just another face-saver.
So let the truth be told, my friends.

I’m moving out of sync and getting left behind
It’s sinking in that there’s nowhere left to hide.
What these thinkers think they never realise
But provers prove and they cannot be denied.
So what are we going to achieve,
Hands open and waiting to receive?

You can never tell me we’re going nowhere
Even when I see the writing’s on the wall.
There’s a lot in this life and it’s all on the line;
As you get old some dreams may die.
Youth is the time to choose your desires,
To aim and aspire no matter what it may require.

I look around at the faces we ignore –
24 and there’s not much more.

I used to lie through my teeth.
I got so sick of the taste.

I used to lie through my teeth,
I got so sick of the taste,
To cover up what’s beneath I held a mask to my face.
I used to lie through my teeth,
But then I gave it away,
For better or worse, but you stayed.
So let the truth be told, my friends.

I’m moving out of sync and getting left behind
It’s sinking in that there’s nowhere left to hide.
What these thinkers think they never realise
But provers prove and they cannot be denied.
It seems we’re running out of time
So I’ll let you in on all these secrets of mine.
