Michigan based Pop Evil have released the first single from their upcoming album. Waking Lions is scheduled for release 16th February 2018. The title track was released on 30th October along with a music video.
Pop Evil are Leigh Kakaty (vocals), Davey Grahs (guitar), Nick Fuelling (guitar), Matt DiRito (bass) and Hayley Cramer (drums) and they capture their sound under the banner of ‘rock’ but it’s also mentioned elsewhere as melodic post-grunge. Regardless of which genre bucket you’d place them in, “Waking Lions” is a great song.
A sweet blend of electronic effects and gritty riffs are how “Waking Lions” begins. We were hooked by addictive riffs and the bounce of the beat, which gives a passionate message a vibe of excitement.
“Waking Lions” speaks about the heart-opening act of letting yourself break free of any metaphorical cages you’ve been living in. Pop Evil are striving to take us into new territory of self expression. They’re urging us to be raw, real, and to fearlessly let loose all the things that we had previously contained.
“I wanna stand up, a hundred feet tall
‘Cause fear will never lead my way “
There’s a smooth progression through the track and it is satisfying to listen to, in soaking up the empowerment the band are sharing. The soaring melodic vocals as well as strong backing feel like unshakeable encouragement. The video echoes the powerful sense of letting things crumble away and stepping over the rubble as we move forward courageously.
