Gnarwolves – Straitjacket (Track Of The Day, 19th June)

Track Of The Day comes from UK trio Gnarwolves. “Straitjacket” is from the band’s album Outsiders (released 5th May).

“Straitjacket” is punk that gets under your skin and makes you want to crash into things. If you can sit still to this track without some part of you being pulled to join in with its vibe, there’s something very wrong. Maybe start by turning it up a bit more.

“I found love on the edge of acceptance
The paranoid privilege of a small town
I fell in and out and in and out and in”

“Straitjacket”, as well as being all-consuming punk, feels like railing against the containments of life, or at least observing those containments begrudgingly.

Underneath the crashing-into-things fight, there’s a fear/tenderness about being alone and that comes creeping in as the song comes to a close.

Lyrics:

I found love at the bottoms of bottles
The edges of twilight where my Sunday slips into my Monday
And I won’t stretch to be more than a user
I’m trying, I’m failing and I’m hungry for a sense of ending

My mind is safe in death
It’s motionless
Flooding my brain with toxins

D’ya hear that I was born in a straitjacket?
I was born in a straitjacket
I was born

I found love on the edge of acceptance
The paranoid privilege of a small town
I fell in and out and in and out and in

My mind is safe in death
In “Spiderwebs”
Flooding my brain with toxins

D’ya hear that I was born in a straitjacket?
I was born in a straitjacket
I was born

I know where this is leaving
With you gone and me leaving
I know where this is leading
When you’re gone, I’m leaving
