Bring Me The Horizon – Throne (Track Of The Day, 23rd June)

Track Of The Day today comes from Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizon, from their 2015 album That’s The Spirit. That’s The Spirit celebrated the idea of embracing darkness and pain, and the songs of the album expressed this concept.

In the words of frontman Oliver Sykes:

The greatest power comes from having accepted your shadow parts & integrated them as components of your Self. Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. At all counts, it forms an unconscious snag, thwarting our most well-meant intentions. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”

“Throne”, as the third track of That’s The Spirit, describes the experience of wounds and negative experiences culminating to build a stronger person. The track seems to be referring to a person scorned that has gone on to use the opportunity to grow and make something even better of themselves – the ultimate revenge:

“So you can throw me to the wolves
Tomorrow I will come back
Leader of the whole pack
Beat me black and blue
Every wound will shape me
Every scar will build my throne”

Musically “Throne” plays with a balance of light and shade: A combination of heavier sound with screams and growls, and more delicate and melodic/electronic sections. It’s aggressive and vitriolic, but there’s also tender and honest elements. The bridge is a stand out, where the vocal fire drops into something more velvety and open, leaving just pulses reverberating across the track. The track then builds back up in strength and fire, directly expressing the concept of recovery against adversity.

The music video for “Throne” also portrays that warrior and survivor vibe, making “Throne” one hell of an empowering track.
