Californian post-hardcore band Being As An Ocean have blown minds and hearts with their Waiting for Morning to Come album. The beautiful and unique collection of piano and electronic focused pieces, along with roared and tender vocals is soothing as well as inspiring.
“Dissolve” is eighth on the album and is our Track Of The Day today. “Dissolve” was the first single released in the lead-up to the new album and was originally shared with spoken word (as in the music video below), though appears with unclean vocals on the album.
“Dissolve” uses metaphor to paint the experience of a long-distance love leading to its demise. It could be capturing the experience of being a member of an internationally touring band, leaving a lover at home, and the connection between them gradually dissolving.
Ironically, their passion as a musician that they are following and that keeps them away becomes their means of pouring out their pain (‘I wear my heart on my sleeve’), allowing their (former?) lover to ‘watch it bleed’.
“From up here the land a patchwork quilt
Sewn together by arthritic hands
Pursuit of passion, persistent guilt
Anxious for loving embrace
Dissolve this ache I’ve felt
Dissolve this ache I’ve felt”
Painted as agonising the relationship in a plane en route to their next destination, they see their lover as losing grip on what was truly felt, no longer feeling the realness in their devotion, letting the connection fade.
Musically, the ache is palpable, as is the ‘what went wrong?’ and wondering if they did this and if they could have done more, but also being struck with the realisation that their partner let this happen and there’s nothing that can be done now.
Enjoy “Dissolve”, via the music video or album version via Spotify below. The video version seems to more strongly reflect a sense of hurt and defeat versus a fire of frustration that is felt in the album version. The simple ‘love is all you need’ overlaid on the video hits unexpectedly hard while the clean vocals ooze a quiet farewell.
