Today’s Track Of The Day comes from You Me At Six‘s Night People album. It is “Take On The World”; a beautiful anthem of unconditional support and acceptance.
The song is gentle at first, soft and sedate, before increasing in power in the message to a loved one; asking them to hand over their troubles, or at least share them. Josh Franceschi’s tender vocals are an invitation to connect as a stronger unit, to together face the challenges that he can see going on with them.
“I can see, see the pain in your eyes
Oh, believe, believe me and I have tried
No, I won’t, I won’t pretend to know what you’ve been through
You should know, I wish it was me, not you”
The song’s expansion, stirringly emotional vocals and arrangement push beyond the lip service of sweet sentiment into something far stronger and purely selfless. Its musical build-up into a grand immersion of sound, of heavy drumbeats, harmonies, and strong guitars, mean that no feels are left unpoked at.
“Look in my eyes, I will never desert you.
And just say the word, we’ll take on the world, we’ll take on the world”
As the track closes by trailing out, the invitation (“Just say the word..”) is left standing, waiting for acceptance.
Have a listen to the inspiring “Take On The World” below.
(On 24th March, You Me At Six released a new version of this track, seeming to be more light and summery and electronically influenced than the rich dynamic of the original. We definitely have a favourite in the original, seeming to capture the weight of the subject more powerfully.)
