From the ashes of Set The Score, bassist Josh Godwin has teamed with Fear Of Flying Objects‘ Sean Ross (guitarist & vocalist) and Jake Leahy (drummer), to form a brand new project: Weighbridge. Debut single “Use” is our first opportunity to see Weighbridge in action.
Weighbridge’s sound is ‘grungy with heavier elements’ (in Josh’s words) and we’re certainly thrust into that from the outset of “Use”. Aching guitar and hard hitting beats set a stage for an emotionally sinking scene – visually featuring Parkwood‘s Sam Bianco in the music video created by Martin Wood Imagery.
Anguish rich vocals tell a story from a self-deprecating hole where numbness is the escape of choice. A sparse bass focus with “this high might get me through the night” screamed out into emptiness amplifies this sense of being emotionally/mentally adrift and trying to get through it alone. It’s a heavy hope-for-the-best situation that Weighbridge are sharing.
The raw and full choruses of “Use” are moreish, as is the gripping onto the edge last ditch effort for survival at the close of the track. There’s life and fight still left in the protagonist and this fierceness gets a very satisfying chance to rear up as “Use” comes to an end. If this isn’t a ‘To be continued..’ vibe, I don’t know what is.
