We were not ready for this. Not ready for new music from Vesperteen, and not ready for it to be so breathtaking.
If you’re unaware, “Sweet Child O’ Mine” is a classic rock anthem from legendary Guns N’ Roses. It’s a signature song of theirs, and has been adored over the decades, with unforgettable guitar riffs, an insane solo by Slash and of course the Axl Rose screech. It’s classic G’N’R a big song to choose to cover.
But Vesperteen went there.
First they set the scene with tubular tones humming across the track, before letting a piano and electro effects invite us in, in the place of the introduction riff. It’s not what you’d expect at all, but it’s clean and peaceful; already a world away from the gritty original and listening with an ear for comparison becomes redundant. It’s clear we just need to soak this in.
Thumping drum beats along with the continuing piano and electro beats foreshadow the beginning of vocals. With pulsed tones accompanying him at the verse, Colin Rigsby’s voice expresses anticipation and care with its richness.
The choruses are expansive and huge. Despite not being smothered in rock, Vesperteen have created an anthem here, firmly in their own style: Crashing drums, genuine expression, tender moments of simplicity, music box chimes and electro brilliance.
“Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place
Where as a child I’d hide
And pray for the thunder
And the rain
To quietly pass me by”
The bridge drops into a dance mix and gives a pep I would never have expected ever existing in conjunction with this song. It’s uniquely done and very Vesperteen.
I’m in love. Check it out.
