Trophy Eyes – Counting Sheep (Track Of The Day, 6th February)

Today’s Track Of The Day leaps out of the gate and kicks off with a hectic punk pace. It’s the second track on Trophy Eyes‘ incredible album Chemical Miracle: “Counting Sheep”.

Ominous drum beats lead us into the verses.

I keep my days open for sleeping in…”

A picture is soon established of a (desperately) lonely person who is struggling with their mental health, using alcohol and the company of others as a means of staying sane.

Please don’t let me leave alone tonight
I’ll wait by your driveway in case you change your mind
We could keep drinking till it feels alright
You know we don’t have to talk
We could just be alive”

Our heart virtually breaks on every listen, with the Trophy Eyes knack for storytelling through song and building the experience for the listener as the song goes on, as well as John Floreani’s impressive knack for pouring intense emotion into his vocals, whether clean or screamed.

The choruses lose some of the franticness of pace (but lose none of the strength) and the close of the track hits the brakes even moreso; giving an epic outro of layered vocals and grandness of sound.

Trophy Eyes are so good at poking around in our feels and having us come away feeling changed. “Counting Sheep” is no exception. Have a listen.
