Northlane – Savage (Track Of The Day, 5th May)

Our Track Of The Day comes from Northlane and their album Mesmer, released 24th March via UNFD.

“Savage” is third track on Mesmer and is a blend of heaviness and haunting encouragement. When I reviewed the album, I found myself moved at the power of the message being shared by Northlane within this track of morphed and distorted metalcore brilliance.

“Savage” speaks as a commentary on the motivations of humanity, as we war with each other. It describes how we forget the bigger picture; that we could be united. It inspites us to instead realise that we’re all humans, who equally bleed and breathe, all contained on this ball hurtling through space. We all share the same sun and same source of energy. These things unite us. A similar powerful sentiment has been shared by other artists, such as Avenged Sevenfold (in the masterpiece that is “Exist” and other tracks on The Stage), wondering out loud about our man-made wars and subsequent destructive ways.

“Witness the bitter end of all
We peeled our stares from the mysteries of the universe
And drew them down onto each other
A waterfall of knowledge cascaded into bullets for our brothers
Led to our deaths by providence
When we were born to discover”

The guitar work is consistently impressive across Mesmer, and “Savage” is no exception. What’s equally impressive is the heart poured into the vocals, having the message shared hit deeply. As “Savage” comes to a close, there is a beautiful shift into spaciousness where vocals and gentle chords and drum beats create a lighter soundscape and we’re pulled to take a higher perspective of all that we are.

Look down at our earth
Through the eyes of the sun

Humankind’s lines don’t divide
Through the eyes of the sun”

There’s a last gasp for impact with heaviness and a powerful cry to “RISE UP! BREAK FREE AS ONE!”. Such a powerful track! Enjoy “Savage” below and share with us what you thought on Facebook or Twitter.
