Halestorm – Fell On Black Days (Track Of The Day, 7th January)

We sure don’t mind a change….

Halestorm today released ReAniMate 3.0: The CoVeRs eP. This is the third of their ReAniMate cover series coming from the rock collective of Lzzy Hale, Arejay Hale, Joe Hottinger, and Josh Smith and consists of six cover songs from various rock artists.

We adore their cover of the Soundgarden classic “Fell On Black Days”, from Soundgarden’s Superunknown album (released in 1994) and have chosen it as our Track Of The Day today.

We love how there’s an openness as well as a dirtiness on the Halestorm version, even though they’ve stayed pretty close to the original sound. The Halestorm cover also feels lighter of mood than the original.

The Joe Hottinger guitarwork is impressive, working in a solo in his own style versus trying to identically replicate Kim Thayil, and Lzzy Hale’s raunchy vocals were so good we didn’t even miss the signature Chris Cornell wail.

On the ReAniMate 3.0: The CoVeRs eP are:

  1. Still Of The Night (Whitesnake)
  2. Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover (Sophie B. Hawkins)
  3. I Hate Myself For Loving You (Joan Jett)
  4. Heathens (Twenty One Pilots)
  5. Fell On Black Days (Soundgarden)
  6. Ride The Lightning (Metallica)

You check out both versions of “Fell On Black Days” below. Whichever way you go, it’s an amazing song.

(I’ve used the Superunknown version for comparison versus the music video recording which is slightly different)
