Halestorm – Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover (Track Of The Day, 1st July)

Track Of The Day today belongs to the Halestorm cover of Sophie B. Hawkins’ song “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover”, from their ReAniMate 3.0: The CoVeRs Ep.

Halestorm rock this 90s hit, celebrating it with gritty vocal force, in comparison to the more subdued vocals of the original. It’s heavier all round, complimenting the weight of what’s being shared in the song.

The track speaks as a confessional, acknowledging a person’s situation of being in a relationship that’s confining and oppressive, and aspiring to be their saviour, lover, nurturer, healer, and everything else they could be.

“I sat on the mountainside with peace of mind
I lay by the ocean making love to her with visions clear
Walked for days with no one near
And I return as chained and bound to you”

It’s a powerful track and never fully feels resolved, taking on a vibe of conviction, sharing all that this person could be for the other.
