Grief – Dormant (New Music)

Dreambound’s YouTube channel consistently showcases incredible bands, and Manchester based GRIEF are yet another that they’ve brought to our attention. The UK five piece have just shared “Dormant” via Dreambound. It also happens to be the band’s debut single, and this is one heck of a strong start!

“Dormant” is immediately easily intriguing for any fans of atmospheric and impactful rock, such as the pieces created by Holding Absence. The track and music video combined swiftly pull us into the subdued colours of what it feels like to be in a state of suspension. Heavy drum beats pull attention in an otherwise sparse section of song, echoing the weight of heartache and separation.

“A lesson in negligence. A lifetime in loneliness.”

Beginning solemnly, “Dormant” grows into a frustrated expression of being stuck and hurt, with nothing that can be done about it. The chorus and it’s “maybe”s takes on a sense of being in a loop of doubt. Hopes for a beautiful life vanished along with the one that left them, and they “can’t get past it”.

I’m a fan of the interwoven layers of thought and melody, before harder hitting statements of sound and word at the chorus. Screamed vocals express a heart that’s already wrung out enough by life, and the bridge which drops this into silence reflects the perception of questioning everything within a vacuum of nothingness.
