Oh how we love Deadlights. You may have noticed, we’ve written a little bit about them already..
The four piece from Brisbane released a killer collection of tracks in their debut album Mesma (21st April on Greyscale Records). “Backwash” from the album is our Track Of The Day.
“Backwash” is musically challenging to the ear, with complexity to its timing having it feel like something we’re chasing after. But it’s engaging as opposed to defeating. This track feels like a celebration of uniqueness and doing things in your own way.
“The few and the far between
Keep dreams alive because
They’ll paint a picture of a scene,
Give something to believe.
The way that it once was.
The way it should be.
So why have what’s shoved down your throat?
When you can find something that’s just for you,
Something unique.”
In our review, I shared that it feels like “Backwash” could easily be commentary on the music industry and becoming contained and fitting into a prescribed box instead of keeping the heart and uniqueness alive. Especially given the Deadlights approach to creating. The track has ‘irregular’ written all over it by way of timing, sound and rhythm and the message shared captures the same essence.
“So why have what’s shoved down your throat?
When you can find something that’s just for you,
Something unique.”
A standout for me on “Backwash” is a shift from around 2:15. Its guitar insanity, in a good way. It’s also a celebration of personal power (“Keeping in touch with the solar plexus / Charges the light bulbs above our necks”), your own unique voice, and keeping in touch with that. It’s done so well on all fronts that I struggle to find suitable adjectives for what Deadlights have created here.
Check out “Backwash” and share with us your thoughts on Facebook or Twitter.
