Citizen – As You Please (Track Of The Day, 16th October)

It is just over a week now since Citizen released As You Please to the world, via Run For Cover/Cooking Vinyl. Everywhere I turn, people are collectively immersing into these beautiful tracks. The title track is our Track Of The Day today.

I couldn’t get past the drums of “As You Please”, with their heart thumping anticipation leading into the track. The smoothness in the simplicity of sound, with barely there guitars at times and those dreamy vocals drenching us like caramel is just too much. Has anyone died from intensely beautiful musical experiences? This album should come with a warning.

“In the barest form, I’ll lead you there
Reach out for anything (reach out for anything)
Reach out for me when you’re lost”

Is it my imagination or do we truly become liquid aurally at the second verse? Hearing rain, in further poetic musings on how lost they are within another. This song seems like a quest for sinking into another, courtesy of a flowing lyrical invitation at the chorus (‘Come, as you want, as you please, I’m needing something to fill in the void’).

In our review of the album, we described it as deep, core-rattling drum beats, much like a pulse that courses through us. As well as noticing the feeling like an ache, the experience of surrendering to another.

The section of collision via guitars feels like a chaotic connection of the two, before all chaos is lost.. and in the space that remains, it’s just Mat Kerekes’ lone voice and core-shaking beats and one of the most beautiful lyrics to be uttered: “Drown in my veins and I am yours forever”. Another memorable moment on this incredible album.

Enjoy “As You Please”.
