“‘No thank you’ is what I should have said.
I should be in bed”
We are so hooked on our Track Of The Day from New York indie pop band AJR. The band comprises of brothers Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met. “Weak” is the second track on their 2016 EP What Everyone’s Thinking, and we have heart eyes emoji faces over it, wishing we’d heard it sooner. 😍
“Weak” starts with piano simplicity and plainly spoken self-judgement and regret, before sliding sweetly into an electro pop land where pleasures and temptations reside.
“I’m weak, and what’s wrong with that?
Boy, oh boy I love ya when I fall for that”
The track clearly describes all the things that seem ‘bad for me‘ and how much they should be resisted… and how they’re not resisted at all.
Musically there’s an awesome distinction between the sombre judging, and the embracing of all they’ve resisted. The track builds up and shifts into something akin to a party within the song. With bone shaking bass, cruisy dance beat, and “Ooh waaaaaaa ee ya ee ya”, it’s far more chilled than the stillness of the judgey parts.
“Weak” is a very cool self-discussion (or maybe self-argument) about choices. It’s addictive, or maybe we’re just to weak to say ‘no thank you’ to another listen.
