Thousand Below – Tradition (Track Of The Day, 2nd November)

Californian post-hardcore band Thousand Below dropped their album The Love You Let Too Close on 6th October.  The first single from the band was “Tradition”, released in January when they signed to Rise Records. It is our Track Of The Day today.

“Tradition” seems to capture a falling out with its hard-hitting sound, and a vibe of confrontation with its screamed and intense vocals. You can almost picture an experience of conflict here; a shock to the system, buttons being pressed, and two clashing.

A relationship has been shaken up and affected, and the aftermath is the sting of the other person’s absence and a flood of questions. They don’t want to be the victim in being open with how much they’re hurt, but the truth is that they are, expressed in this brilliant lyric:

“But now I’m stuck tailored to this suit of broken skin”

The lyrics share openly how they notice an uncomfortable mirroring (“I hate the way that you are, but we’re not that different”). The beautiful close of the track affirms that life will go on for them and they will survive this, even without this mirror image person of them no longer in their life (“I’ll keep singing, I’ll keep breathing, My reflection is all I’m missing”).

Thousand Below have a powerful sound with intensity and relentlessness seeming to be the centrepiece. “Tradition” is yet another impressive track from the band. Soak it up via the music video or stream via Spotify.
