Stick To Your Guns – The Suspend (Track Of The Day, 20th January)

It was stumbling across the Better Ash Than Dust EP that introduced us to Stick To Your Guns, as well as lured us to see them live when they toured locally. We fell in love with the meaning behind the songs and the force for having people make something meaningful of their lives, rather than just merely existing.

So on 20th January we were at the Corner Hotel (Melbourne), up against the barrier, and seeing the band we’d been waiting for, playing the song we’d been waiting for: “The Suspend”.

Along the way, on this “Better Australia Than Dust” tour, we were really impressed by Adelaide’s Reactions band, who played a strong set of great tunes, confidently commanding the crowd. Relentless (Sydney) were after them, with intensity that revved us all up. Next up were Kentucky, USA’s Knocked Loose, who set the crowd alight with their aggressive energy. And lastly were Stick To Your Guns..

We were moved, inspired, excited and empowered by these five guys from Orange Country. It was a beautiful thing to be a part of a crowd cheering for acceptance and tolerance toward others, not to mention screaming the lyrics together. We could have listened to Jesse Barnett talk all night; creating hope with his speeches, and inspiring change with his time on stage and the band’s music.

“The Suspend” was played last night, and we managed to get a recording of it. But first the lyrics:

From the first time I saw you I knew it was true
No static, turbulence, no curtain
Just you
You gave me the tools I’d need to use when you said “Son, you must always stand in your truth”
Now I build myself up just to tear it all down just to start all again with the pieces I’ve found and with parts handed down I build as high as I can
Until I hit the sky, I won’t stop until then
And when I can’t climb anymore I will sit and admire the things that I’ve done and I’ll use that fire I have in my heart for those left behind to now climb on my back and go even higher
I’ll give I won’t lend. I won’t break but I’ll bend
I’ll move with the wind and I won’t fear the end because I won’t live forever but I will die tall
I see only one truth and that truth comes for us all.
Until death relieves me, I’ll give until I’ve got nothing left

Amazing song, at an amazing show. Enjoy.
