Stick To Your Guns – Better Ash Than Dust (Track Of The Day, 10th January)

Today’s Track Of The Day comes courtesy of a whole lot of excitement about seeing Stick To Your Guns later in the month when they’re here in Australia with Knocked Loose, Relentless and Reactions.

The Better Ash Than Dust EP has been on heavy rotation here since we first heard it, and it’s getting a lot of play in the lead-up to the show. It’s five powerful tracks asking each of us to individually be set alight with what matters to us (“Just give a fuck about something!”), versus become complacent and merely exist.

The title track “Better Ash Than Dust” is one such track, commenting about lifestyles we exist inside and can also become consumed by.

“We sit and watch our dance of death
As we slowly drown in this selfishness
This is the end
You’re one of us
I can’t go out like them
Better ash than dust”

Stick To Your Guns add to this ‘wake up and live’ commentary with a powerful video for the track, highlighting elements of American lifestyle and culture, taken in by a small and innocent child who is watching it all.

The song closes with a soundbite from Nina Simone, speaking on what she feels is the duty of artists to reflect the state of affairs going on in the world around them.

Separate to this song (or not), is this glorious quote by Jack London about the concept of burning brightly and living versus a sleepy existence:
“I would rather be ashes than dust!
I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot.
I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
The function of man is to live, not to exist.
I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them.
I shall use my time.”
― Jack London
