Easy Life – I’ll Leave You Behind (Track Of The Day, 23rd October)

Our Track Of The Day is an epic of a track from Easy Life. The Shellharbour five piece of Max, Kurt, Jack, Jordan, and Jesse released their EP There Can’t Be This Much Water In The Sky last month with the fresh backing of UNFD.

Fourth on the EP is “I’ll Leave You Behind”. I wasn’t lying when I said ‘epic’. This track is something else. The riff at the introduction grabbed on and didn’t let go, and the intensity generated once the vocals joined in sparked curiosity. I wanted to hear this story and where it was going.

Lyrically “I’ll Leave You Behind” felt like a stream of thoughts that were bombarding, trying to make sense of a jumble of pieces gained, as well as trying to understand mortality. On this journey of a song we are moved through the bombardment into an ill-at-ease sickness, and left breathless in the process:

“Sanity is what I was forced to believe
But now I’m stuck spinning inside this dream machine, forever”

The pieces/experiences of life continue to flood in, despite a calmer sound and clean vocals. But a distaste builds and grows into head heaviness with relentless questioning, and intensity builds again. It’s full-on, impressive, epic. A front row seat to an anxious mind running wild, and captured in a song.

Its closure (which was Max’s submission to Shia LaBeouf’s #andintheend performance art last year) is a stark break from what was just experienced.

“And in the end nothing can define me
Not my anxiety, not my own mind
Just myself”

Take the time and check out “I’ll Leave You Behind”.
