Depth Magazine is proud to premiere the brand new single from London solo artist Danny Wright: “Is This Rock n Roll?”.
We first ‘met’ Danny Wright with his single “Staying In”. We were touched by his gentle expression of crippling ambition as a musician, and having grand goals that are far far away from reality. So far away, in fact, that they left him paralysed and stuck; waking late, procrastinating, and living a life of TV and take away food, before repeating it all again the next day, those grand goals still there, taunting in their distance, yet unchanged in their strength of desire.
Danny shares a similar sentiment with his new track “Is This Rock n Roll?”. Danny’s question “Is this rock n roll?” is a question of “Am I there yet? Am I living the life I’ve craved?”. It’s a continuation of that high ambition as a musician and wanting to ‘make it’.
Danny has chronicled his experience of reflecting on a past self that craved ‘this’, without seeming to know that ‘this’ would mean struggle, dealing with tough emotions, and losing people from his life.
“My mind is always telling me go out and chase your dreams
But I’ve been chasing ghosts who I don’t know”
He acknowledges the vagueness of the dream and that maybe this is it, despite the jadedness and exhaustion he’s dealing with. With “Is This Rock n Roll?”, Danny is putting a call out for understanding of where he is right now.
The artwork for “Is This Rock n Roll?” with blood and raw flesh exposed feels very relevant to this vulnerable expression of Danny’s ‘insides’ as a musician.
