We were fortunate enough to see Bring Me The Horizon yesterday. One of the songs they played was “Doomed” off their That’s The Spirit album.
“Doomed” is the first track on That’s The Spirit. It was described by Oliver Sykes in That’s The Spirit commentary that it was the first they wrote and the last they finished, due to not being able to get the lyrics to sound right. They considered it to be a ‘weird and crazy track that we all loved’.
A bad experience that Oliver went through at the time of finishing up That’s The Spirit finally provided the inspiration leading to “Doomed” as we now know it; an eclectic blend of samples and sounds.
“So leave a light on I’m coming home
It’s getting darker but I’ll carry on
The sun don’t shine but it never did
And when it rains it fucking pours
But I think I like it
And you know that I’m in love with the mess
I think I like it”
Oliver described how facing the darkness/demons of depression at the time, and going into a kind of ‘euphoric sadness’, he felt that it ‘cleansed his mind’, and that the embracing the darkness can be healing, if he’d just let it happen.
The entire That’s The Spirit album is about celebrating darkness, and the combination of the umbrella graphic and multicoloured patterns reinforces this: Life as a blend of both dark and light.
