Ruben Hultman – Walls (Track Of The Day, 8th June)

A lone and distant piano slowly echoes its notes. This sombre heaviness is how our Track Of The Day begins.

Genre-defiant solo artist Ruben Hultman released LOST [B-Sides] on 11th March and Depth Magazine had the pleasure to premiere it. The first track on LOST [B-Sides] is “Walls”, and its sombre introduction is a perfect way to be invited into the expression of a contorted heart, courtesy of its Swedish creator.

As “Walls” continues, distorted rock guitar and heavy drums combine, creating a feeling of being pulled in multiple directions; feeling emotionally seasick. Ruben lends his voice to this; clear, but breathless and emotional, expressing an emptiness felt within him and a continued discomfort he’s feeling.

“Teach me the art
Of tearing down walls
The walls holding my heart
They stand stubborn before me
They’re stubborn before me
They barely move at all”

It’s a potent chorus, capturing the discomfort of knowing why things feel so bad and yet feeling powerless to do anything about it. Felix Lindgren’s guitar work throughout as well as his solo lend a seeking and ‘trying to find a way out of this’ vibe, supporting the discomfort of the track.

We’re huge admirers of the way Ruben takes genuine emotion and uses music, lyrics, and tone to bring those emotions to life and out into the world for all that have felt the same to resonate with.

Check out “Walls” as well as “Lost At Sea” from LOST [B-Sides]. Ruben has also hinted on social media about his upcoming EP Happy Face, which we cannot wait to see released!

Lyrics:

The heart of a man
Might be something you’ll never understand
But the hole in mine
Runs deeper than yours ever can
There’s a void inside this heart of mine

Inside of me
My guts & my veins
I am torn in between
My lungs & you
Your air that I breathe
It’s poisoning me

Teach me the art
Of tearing down walls
The walls holding my heart
They stand stubborn before me
They’re stubborn before me
They barely move at all

I toss as I turn
spin ‘round & ‘round
But I can’t seem to find
Less wrongs than rights
Just more of a vacuum
A black hole inside

Teach me the art
Of tearing down walls
The walls holding my heart
They stand stubborn before me
They’re stubborn before me
They barely move at all
They barely move at all
