We recently got to know Ruben Hultman and his EP Portraits. Every single one of the brilliant tracks from Portraits has gradually had its turn at getting stuck in our heads. “Brother” is the latest.
“Brother” is a tribute to Ruben’s brother Johan, who was a huge influence in Ruben’s love for music being as it is today. The track has a playful beat and sweet and moving lyrics.
“Hand in hand we would face the world
There is nothing more I would rather do
Than to heal all of your wounds
No, there’s nothing more that I’d rather do”
The song isn’t just a tribute with lyrics, but with the sound also. When we had a chat with Ruben, he shared that he based the song on a marching snare sound, “because when he [Johan] gave me drumming lessons I played a lot of marching snare-pieces in the percussion ensemble.” There’s also an Irish feel on the lead guitar, due to Ruben and Johan playing “Irish Reel” together with a flute ensemble at a concert.
This thoughtfulness and congruence by way of what he is creating is one reason we love Ruben Hultman’s music.
We can share that Ruben has another EP in the works, and we’re looking forward to that being released! In the meantime, here is “Brother”.
